Government announces new advice service for discrimination issues

The Home Office has announced that a new Equality Advisory and Support Service is to be commissioned. This will provide free advice and information on discrimination and human rights issues. The service will provide the same level of support on human rights as the existing EHRC helpline. Funding for the EHRC's helpline and legal grants programme will finish from the end of 2011-12. The Home Office also confirmed that state funding for legal advice in relation to the Equality Act 2010 will be delivered solely through legal aid, which will be available at existing levels once the reforms to legal aid are implemented.

The announcement was made following consultation launched in March 2011 on reforming the EHRC.
